Once you comply with the requirements 4.1 to 4.3, there should be no further obstacles to the issuance of a visa. Depending on whether an admission letter from a German university is already available or not, the applicant receives a student applicant visa as Schengen-visa or a student visa as national visa.

You have to apply for a visa at the consulate of the German embassy.

For the application for a student visa the following documents have to be submitted:

  1. Valid passport with leftover empty pages
  2. Three completely filled-out "Kat-II"-visa application sheets with four passport photos as well as two sets of copies of the following documents:
  3. Letter of admission or application confirmation *
  4. Prior report cards, which entitle you to take up higher education (e.g. "Abitur" certificate or similar certificate of qualification for university matriculation and - if applicable - proof of prior studies, university diploma), in case an letter of unrestricted admission is not yet available
  5. Proof of German language skills (if applicable also proof of registration for an intensive language course in Germany **)
  6. Proof of adequate funding for the first year (at least the BaföG-standard assistance rate ("Regelfördersatz") of currently 585 Euros per month has to be available):


Possibilities concerning No. 6:

a) disclosure of the earning capacities and financial circumstances of your parents, e.g. through
- notarially certified statement of coverage of at least 585 Euros (better: 600 Euros) per month for the entire duration of the study
- and reference to a bank account with a balance of at least 7.020 Euros (better: 7.500 Euros) or corresponding amount in another currency (in case the amount is available in another currency, the equivalent amount in Euros has to be declared in the official bank statement)

or

b) a formal obligation ("Verpflichtungserklärung") with credit assessment ("Bonitätsprüfung") in accordance with § 68 residence law ("Aufenthaltsgesetz"), declared by a third person at a German aliens department ("Ausländerbehörde") or agency abroad ("Auslandsvertretung") for the entire duration of the study

or

c) deposit of a security on a blocked account ("Sperrkonto") in Germany (at least 7.020 Euros) from which only 1/12 of the deposited amount may be disbursed per month

or

f) depositation of a bank guarantee at a financial institution in Germany that has to be renewed annually (at least 7.020 Euros).
